Pandani Grove

A short circuit around Lake Dobson among giant pandani (Richea pandanifolia) and sub-alpine forest. Only exists if Lake Dobson Road is open.

Do not pair: Do not treat Pandani Grove as a warm-up you must follow with the 12 km shelf. If anyone is cold here, the shelf is off.

Turnaround: Finish this loop and reassess at the Lake Dobson shelter. If cloud, wind or clothing fail the test, drive down in daylight. Russell Falls is still the park.

  • Driving gravel without phoning option 3, then meeting a closed road or ice with no Plan B at the waterfalls.
  • Using this 30-minute circuit as a reason to continue onto Tarn Shelf when the group is already cold.
  • Grade 2 — formed circuit around the lake
  • 30–40 minutes
  • 1.5 km circuit
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: Alpine shoreline when Tarn Shelf weather is too wild

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania before you go.

Where you start

Lake Dobson car park

16 km up unsealed Lake Dobson Road from the entrance. Toilet/shelter at the lake. Confirm road status with the Visitor Centre (03 6288 1149 option 3) before you leave the sealed road.

How to get there

  1. Phone 03 6288 1149 option 3 before you leave the sealed entrance. Fine weather at Russell Falls does not mean the gravel is open.
  2. Lake Dobson Road: 15–16 km gravel, steep/winding, not suitable for campervans, buses or long vehicles.
  3. Chains may be required in winter. Road can close for snow. 2WD is often enough in dry conditions; high-clearance helps but is not always mandatory.
  4. Parks Pass required. No public transport. Screenshot road advice on Visitor Centre Wi-Fi — coverage dies as you climb.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Walk the signed circuit around the lake. Stay on the track — alpine plants are fragile.
  2. Use this as a short weather check before you start Tarn Shelf.
  3. If snow covers the shelf, this short circuit may still be a good alpine outing for the day.
  4. If the lake is in cloud, wind or you arrived late, treat Pandani Grove as the whole alpine visit.
  5. Pack alpine layers even for 30 minutes. The waterfall car park being mild is not a forecast.

What to expect

Pandani Grove is a Grade 2 circuit of about 1.5 km and 30–40 minutes around Lake Dobson among giant pandani (Richea pandanifolia) and sub-alpine forest. It is the alpine weather test, not a consolation walk.

If the shelf is in cloud, wind or you arrived late, this circuit can be the whole alpine visit. It only exists if Lake Dobson Road is open.

The road is the gate

You only reach this walk if the 15–16 km gravel road is open and your vehicle is suitable. Official advice: not suitable for campervans, buses or long vehicles. Phone 03 6288 1149 option 3. Winter often means chains or a closed road.

The café at the entrance being open is not a road report. If the Visitor Centre says stay down, stay down. Russell Falls plus Three Falls Circuit is still a good day.

Weather test before Tarn Shelf

Walk this circuit first. If the group is already cold, if the shelf is in cloud, or if anyone is not dressed for 1000 m, turn around here. The shorter ski-field return on Tarn Shelf is the next official shorter day — not an off-track shortcut.

Twilight Tarn Hut is not on this loop. Government Huts near Lake Dobson are a separate official booking, not a drop-in.

Packing for 30 minutes at 1000 m

Waterproofs, warm layers, a hat and gloves even in summer. Boardwalk ices over. Hypothermia is a planning note in every month at this elevation.

Coverage is poor. 000 needs reception. Screenshot track notes before you climb. A PLB is more about the shelf than this circuit — still carry the comms plan you would use if you continued.

Extra tips

  • Pack alpine layers even for 30 minutes.
  • Twilight Tarn Hut is not on this short circuit. You reach it on the longer Tarn Shelf walk.
  • Fuel-stove only. Toilet/shelter at Lake Dobson.
  • If the road is shut, Russell Falls is still the park. Do not wait in the car park hoping the gravel opens.

Often paired with Tarn Shelf— only if energy and weather allow.
