Winter: snow, road & Mount Mawson
A winter day that may end at Russell Falls · Best for: Visitors who accept Tasmanian snow as conditional
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania the morning you go
Snow is possible any month at altitude and common in winter. Lake Dobson Road may need chains or be closed. Mount Mawson tows run when cover is adequate — never assume a ski day from a Hobart forecast.

Winter Mount Field is two parks: a usually walkable waterfall precinct and a conditional alpine road. Plan the falls as the guaranteed day. Treat snow as a bonus you confirm that morning.
Phone 03 6288 1149 option 3 before you leave the sealed entrance. Chains are a winter planning item, not something you hope to borrow at the Visitor Centre. Official advice still bars campervans, buses and long vehicles.
Mount Mawson is a southern Tasmanian club field, not a packaged resort. Cover, tows and the road all change quickly. A Parks Pass is still required. This site does not publish live snow reports — use Parks Tasmania and the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association the morning you drive.
Always verify road status and field operation. This itinerary is planning guidance only.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Pack for both parks
Waterproofs, insulated layers, headlamp, Parks Pass. If you intend to drive the alpine road, pack chains and a hypothermia kit. Screenshot official alerts. Tell someone the plan.
Morning of
Phone option 3
Visitor Centre 03 6288 1149 option 3 for the road. Check ski-association updates if tows matter. A Hobart frost does not mean the gravel is open or the tows are running.
If the road is shut
Russell Falls / Three Falls
This is still a complete winter day. Waterproofs, warm layers, early dusk. Café and Curiosity Room are the reset, not a ski lodge. Do not wait in the car park hoping the gravel opens in an hour.
If the road is open
Pandani Grove first
Ice on boardwalk. If you lack winter travel skills, do not start the full Tarn Shelf circuit just because the car made it to the lake. If tows are running, that is a club-field day — still a Parks Pass, still alpine packing.
Leave
Daylight, then wildlife
Winter dusk is early. Driving the gravel or the Derwent Valley in the dark among wildlife is how a “maybe ski day” becomes a worse day. Turn around with the day you actually got.
Packing
- Chains (if driving alpine)
- Insulated layers + waterproofs
- Headlamp
- Warm hat, gloves, spare socks
- Parks Pass confirmation
Optional kit searches live on the gear list— not on this itinerary.
Parking & access tips
- If chains are required and you do not have them, you do not drive the road.
- Ski-field parking is not overflow camping.
- If the road is shut, park at the Visitor Centre and walk the falls.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Night driving
- Inventing a ski-resort expectation
- Full Tarn Shelf without winter travel skills
- A campervan on Lake Dobson Road
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Winter visitors who will accept Russell Falls as the whole day
- People who already own chains if they intend to climb the gravel
- Skiers who treat Mawson as a club field, not a mainland resort
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If option 3 says closed: waterfalls. Stop arguing with the phone
- If you do not have chains and chains are required: waterfalls
- If tows are shut but the road is open: Pandani Grove only, unless you planned an alpine walk
- If dusk is close: leave. Wildlife plus ice is enough
What success looks like
- The day you confirmed that morning, not the day you wished July would give you
- Off the road in daylight
- Parks Pass paid; hut bookings still a separate official system if you sleep at 1000 m

- Russell FallsThe park’s postcard waterfall: a short sealed walk from the Visitor Centre to a three-tiered drop in fern gully. It is a proper rainforest stop, not just a photo from the car park. Most first visits start here, then add more if there is time.
