Where you start

Alpine zone (confirm official start)

Confirm current track notes, signed start, access and weather with Parks Tasmania and the Visitor Centre the morning you go. Do not invent a start from a lookout or ski-field path.

How to get there

  1. Lake Dobson Road logistics apply. Phone 03 6288 1149 option 3. Parks Pass required.
  2. Not suitable for campervans, buses or long vehicles.
  3. PLB recommended. Official guidance is that coverage inside the park is very limited, especially on alpine tracks.
  4. Start early. A 5–6 hour Grade 5 day plus gravel plus the Hobart return needs a dusk buffer.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Experienced parties only. Carry map, layers, extra food and a communications plan that does not assume mobile coverage.
  2. Verify grade, distance and closures the morning you go. Published 13 km / 5–6 hours is a planning figure only.
  3. Turn back if navigation or weather deteriorates. There is no café, no hut booking, and no shortcut that is worth leaving the formed route.
  4. Twilight Tarn Hut and Government Huts are not informal lodgings on this walk.

Who this walk is for

Experienced alpine walkers only. Published as about 13 km and 5–6 hours, Grade 5 — verify live. If Tarn Shelf felt like a stretch, this is not the upgrade.

Not a first Mount Field visit. Not a family circuit. Not something you add after Russell Falls because the gravel road happened to be open.

What to expect

A long, rougher alpine day to two lakes. Weather at 1000 m+ can flip in any month. You need a map you can use, a turnaround time you will obey, and a comms plan that does not assume a phone.

Confirm the signed start on the day. This site does not invent a trailhead when Parks Tasmania’s live notes are the authority.

Kit and comms

Full alpine kit plus PLB or satellite messenger. Waterproofs, warm layers, extra food, headlamp, TasMap. Screenshot official notes on Visitor Centre Wi-Fi.

000 needs reception. Install Emergency+ before you lose signal. Tell someone your plan and when you will be overdue.

When not to go

Late start, doubtful weather, ice you did not pack for, or a group still learning alpine walking. Reverse is the plan, not a failure.

If Lake Dobson Road is closed or chained beyond your skill, stay in the waterfall precinct. Three Falls Circuit is still a complete day.

Map (orientation)

Extra tips

  • Pair with an overnight at the campground so you are not driving Hobart after a 6-hour alpine day.
  • Do Tarn Shelf first on an earlier trip. This is not the signature alpine day — Tarn Shelf is.
  • Fuel-stove only. Pack out rubbish.

Often paired with Tarn Shelf— only if energy and weather allow.
