Where you start
Alpine trailheads (confirm official)
No formal multi-day hut-to-hut track like the Overland. Government Huts + campground are the official overnight bases. Verify wild-camping rules before any overnight. Confirm the signed start at the Visitor Centre the morning you go.
How to get there
- Lake Dobson Road + Parks Pass. Phone 03 6288 1149 option 3. Start early.
- Not suitable for campervans, buses or long vehicles. Winter snow is common on the high ridge.
- An 8–9 hour day plus gravel plus Hobart is a long daylight problem. Overnight at the campground or book Government Huts officially if that is the plan.
- Carry TasMap, PLB and full alpine kit. Coverage is unreliable.
How to do it (step by step)
- This is a full alpine day. If the group is not moving well by the first decision point, turn around.
- There is no Overland-style hut chain. Twilight Tarn Hut and Government Huts are not informal lodgings on this route.
- Verify wild-camping rules before any overnight. This site does not treat a blog as a camping permit.
- Winter snow on the high ridge is common. If you need winter travel skills and do not have them, do not start.
Most visitors should skip this
Mount Field West is the park high point at 1434 m: published as about 17 km return and 8–9 hours, Grade 5. Verify live. Tarn Shelf is the signature alpine day. This is a long, experienced-walker route, not the postcard.
If you have not already done Tarn Shelf in decent weather, you are not under-achieving by staying there. You are picking the walk that matches the park.
Who this walk is for
Fit, experienced alpine walkers with a map they can use, a PLB, and a turnaround time they will obey. Not a first visit. Not a stack-on after Three Falls. Not a reason to take a campervan up Lake Dobson Road.
If anyone in the group treated Tarn Shelf as a stretch, stay on the shelf or at Pandani Grove.
Overnight and huts
There is no Overland-style hut-to-hut track. Government Huts near Lake Dobson book only on official Parks Tasmania channels (commonly a two-night minimum — verify) and still need a Parks Pass. Twilight Tarn Hut is a historic shelter on the shelf circuit, not a booked bed on this route.
Wild-camping rules change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you plan an overnight. The Tyenna campground is first-come, first-served and a separate fee from the Parks Pass.
When not to go
Late start, short winter daylight, snow you are not equipped for, or a road report that is anything other than open. Reverse at the first decision point if the group is slow.
A dark drive down the gravel and through the Derwent Valley among wildlife is how an 8-hour ridge day becomes a worse day. Overnight locally, or pick Tarn Shelf.

Extra tips
- Most visitors should never need this walk. Tarn Shelf is the signature alpine day.
- Start earlier than you think. An 8–9 hour return plus the gravel drive eats winter daylight.
- Government Huts book only on official Parks Tasmania channels and still need a Parks Pass.
- Fuel-stove only. Pack out rubbish.
Often paired with Tarn Shelf— only if energy and weather allow.
