Mount Mawson ski field
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania for live road and track status
A small club ski field on the alpine plateau, operating weekends and holidays when snow cover is adequate. Check the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association. It is not a guaranteed resort day.
- Best for: Winter visitors who already accept Tasmanian snow realism
- Time: A winter day when the road and tows are actually running
- Same Lake Dobson Road constraints. Road frequently restricted in winter.

Winter realism
Mount Mawson is a southern Tasmanian ski field, not a packaged alpine resort. Cover, tow operation and road access change quickly. Confirm with official park channels and Southern Tasmanian Ski Association updates the morning you drive.
If the tows are shut, Pandani Grove and a short snow-covered shelf walk (only if you have the skills) may still be the day. If the road is shut, Russell Falls still exists. Do not leave Hobart assuming a ski day because it is July.
Same road, harder day
You use the same 15–16 km Lake Dobson Road. Phone 03 6288 1149 option 3. Chains are a winter planning item, not an optional extra you hope to borrow at the Visitor Centre. Closures are common. Night driving in snow and wildlife is a poor combination.
Park only where signed. The ski-field car park is not overflow camping. Government Huts remain a separate official booking if you intended to sleep at 1000 m.
What a club field actually is
Expect rope tows, volunteer or club-scale operations, and limited facilities compared with a mainland resort. Opening is typically weekends and holidays when cover is adequate — verify, do not diary it as a certainty.
A Parks Pass is still required. Ski-field operation is not park entry. This site does not sell lift products and does not publish live snow reports. Use official park pages plus the ski association for the morning you travel.
If the tows or the road are shut
Road shut: stay in the waterfall precinct. Russell Falls in winter rain is still the park. Do not wait in the Visitor Centre car park hoping the gravel opens in an hour.
Road open, tows shut: Pandani Grove is the weather test. Longer shelf walking in snow is only for people who already planned an alpine day — layers, navigation, PLB, turnaround time. Pair this page with the winter-snow itinerary and the alpine area guide.

FAQ — Mount Mawson
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is skiing guaranteed in winter?
No. Mount Mawson operates when cover is adequate, typically weekends and holidays. Always verify road status and field operation. This site does not publish live snow reports.
Do I still need a Parks Pass to ski?
Yes. A Tasmania Parks Pass is required park-wide. Ski-field operation is separate from park entry. Government Hut bookings are a third system.
Can I take a campervan up in winter?
No. Lake Dobson Road is not suitable for campervans, buses or long vehicles in any season. Winter adds ice, chains and closures.
What if I drive up and the tows are shut?
Treat Pandani Grove as the weather test if you have alpine layers. If the road is closed or you are not equipped for snow walking, turn around and walk Russell Falls. The café at the entrance is the reset, not a ski lodge.
