A Mount Field day from Hobart works well if you allow for the drive and keep the alpine circuit off a waterfall morning. The usual mess is arriving at 11:30, lingering at Russell Falls, driving gravel in a long vehicle, and heading down in the dark among wallabies.
The park is compact by Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage standards and stacked by elevation. The sealed entrance has the Visitor Centre, café and waterfall walks. Fifteen kilometres of gravel then climb to Lake Dobson. From Hobart you can do the lower park comfortably. The alpine shelf needs an earlier start and a confirmed open road.

The drive
A10/Lyell Highway to New Norfolk, then B62/B61 Gordon River Road via Westerway to the township of National Park. Fuel and food options are better in New Norfolk than at the park gate. The last stretch is rural, not freeway.
Wildlife is the evening problem. Plan to be off park roads before dusk if you can. There is no public-transport fallback if you mis-time the return.
What fits in one day

Fits: Parks Pass admin, Russell Falls, café, and Three Falls Circuit if you start promptly. Official circuit figures are 6 km, Grade 3, 2–2.5 hours — families often need three.
Usually does not fit from Hobart: Lake Dobson Road plus a 5–6 hour Tarn Shelf circuit plus a safe daylight drive home. That is an overnight or a second day.
Printable skeletons live on the half-day Russell Falls and full-day Three Falls itineraries. Use those when you want a reverse clock, not only a vibe.
Fees — do not merge them
System A is the Parks Pass (vehicle or person products — verify current dollars). System B is campground fees if you stay. System C is Government Huts. A day trip only needs System A.
Never treat camping or huts as a Booking.com product. There is no separate Russell Falls ticket. Buy or screenshot the pass before peak weekends.
A clock that actually works
Leave Hobart early enough that you are on the sealed path by mid-morning. Do Russell Falls first. Decide at the platforms whether Three Falls energy remains. Reverse at any falls rather than forcing a loop on a tired group.
Agree a leave-the-park time before you start walking. Winter dusk is early. A calm waterfall day and a safe return beats a heroic alpine add-on after lunch.
When weather or wind changes the day
Rain still makes Russell Falls excellent. Wind can close rainforest tracks — falling limbs are the reason. Ask at the Visitor Centre before you start Three Falls.
Café plus Curiosity Room is a valid reset. It is not a failed trip. If the alpine road was your secret Plan B, phone 03 6288 1149 option 3 first. Café open is not a road report.
What goes wrong on this day
Late Hobart start → long photo stop at Russell Falls → impulse gravel drive → dusk wildlife. Fix: one plan, leave-by time, no Lake Dobson after 2 pm.
Campervan on Lake Dobson Road. Official advice is that the gravel is not suitable for campervans, buses or long vehicles. Park at the entrance and walk the falls.
Treating Three Falls as a stroll. It is Grade 3 with 200+ steps. Sneakers get slick on wet timber.
Overnight if you want the shelf tomorrow
The Tyenna River campground is first-come, first-served, about 200 m from the Visitor Centre. Separate camping fee plus Parks Pass. Government Huts are a third official system up the gravel road.
Sleeping in National Park, Maydena, Westerway or New Norfolk also buys a Tarn Shelf morning without a pre-dawn Hobart exit. See the stay hub and the overnight itinerary.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is a Hobart–Mount Field day trip realistic?
Yes, if you leave early, walk Russell Falls or Three Falls Circuit, and leave time for dusk on the drive home. It gets messy when groups add Lake Dobson and Tarn Shelf to the same day.
How long is the drive from Hobart?
Typically just over an hour / about 70–75 km via New Norfolk and Westerway in light traffic. Add buffers. There is no direct public transport.
Do I need a Parks Pass just for Russell Falls?
Yes. A Tasmania Parks Pass is required park-wide. There is no separate waterfall ticket. Verify current prices at passes.parks.tas.gov.au.
Can I do Three Falls and Tarn Shelf on the same Hobart day?
Usually too much. Three Falls already fills a day. Adding a 5–6 hour alpine loop plus gravel plus a safe drive home often means wildlife at dusk. Stay overnight, or pick one.
Is there a bus to the park?
No public transport. Plan a private vehicle or a booked tour. Fuel and last supermarket shop belong in New Norfolk.
